Baby, it’s cold outside.
That’s a phrase, we Canadians, know well. When it’s minus-something degrees out, it’s important to be prepared. So, what does that look like?
Here are our top recommendations for what to wear when it’s freezing with a capital BRRR outside. We call this, “Minus Style.”
Layers
When planning for cold weather, we all know, that things can change unexpectedly. That’s why layering is the best idea. If you’re planning any outdoor sports like skiing or skating, or even tobogganing, make sure you have a wicking base layer to absorb any sweat. The other layers should be comfortable on top. If you’re just going to work or running essential errands, then wicking might not be necessary.
Under Armour is a great place to find your layering needs and they also have In-Store Cash Back available. Although they’re really well known for their backpacks, Herschel Supply also has great fleece sweaters and pants which are perfect for staying warm. And check out the Carhartt brand from Mark’s for great pieces, that also happen to be super trendy!
Coat
Your coat is one of the greatest investments (regardless of price) you’ll make in your wardrobe because of how much you’ll wear it (and need it!) in the winter. A good quality winter coat should last you several seasons (or longer) and keep you warm. We love the variety offered by Patagonia. They have jackets everything – snow sports, parkas long and short, puffers, shells, and even insulated. (Oh, and a variety of beautiful colours too.)
Another great shop is Moosejaw, where they can clothe you from head to toe in down, fleece, GORE-TEX, and way, way more. They cover men, women, and kids’ wear and have the top outdoor brands all under one digital roof.
Pants
Pants are an especially important factor if you plan on spending a lot of time outdoors, like if you’re sports-ing or just enjoy the cooler weather. For that reason, we love both Columbia Sportswear and SAIL because of the amazing choices they offer. They have leggings, fleece, insulated snow pants, waterproof pants, and much more.
Footwear
Whether it’s rainy season out west or you’re stuck in several feet of snow in other parts of the country, the proper footwear is essential. They will keep your feet warm and dry – if you’ve ever had wet feet you know it’s a drag! We love Hunter Boots because they come in all heights, for all ages, from short to tall boots, and you can get a variety of their “tall boot socks” for warm and cozy, and most importantly, dry feet all day long.
Meanwhile, Sorel offers all kinds of footwear, from winter boots to snow boots and rain boots. They even have slippers for those post-outdoor-time-to-relax moments. Speaking of comfy, UGG is where its at. From the traditional boots to their perfect slippers, your feet will thank you.
Accessories
Let’s talk accessories for a hot minute. Hats (or toques as we Canadians like to call them), gloves, earmuffs, and even masks. These are all equally important in your Minus Style quest for perfection. Mountain Hardwear, PRFO Sports and Altitude Sports have you covered… literally. Combined, they both have a great selection for any and all needs.
Kids
Do your kids need special consideration? They sure do. They grow fast, so it’s important to make sure their winter gear fits before it’s needed, but not too early or it may no longer fit (work your brain around that one!) You should also consider jacket length, extendable sleeves and pant legs or adjustable waist tabs, reflective markers (so they can be seen in the dark), and attachments for gloves or mitts. And just like adults, there are different types of winter coats and pants for kids, like snow jackets or 3-in-1 jackets (with removable interior lining), snow pants, bibs, fleece pants, and 1-piece snowsuits.
We’re fans of the selection and price points at Carter’s OshKosh B’gosh and Baby Gap, but we also love Hudson’s Bay and Old Navy for their vast selections – you’ll find everything you need to keep the kiddos warm and dry.
